Functional MRI of human auditory cortex using block and event-related designs.

چکیده
fMRI of human auditory cortex response to sinusoidal tones of 200, 1000, and 3000 Hz was evaluated using block design and conventional and "silent" event-related designs. Conventional event-related fMRI revealed the timecourse of the BOLD response (approximately 5 sec to peak, approximately 4 sec full-width-half-max, and approximately 14 sec recovery to baseline). Both event-related, but not block, designs provided evidence for tonotopic organization in auditory cortex. Sources of low-frequency activation were more lateral and anterior than the sources of high-frequency activation (P < or = 0.05). In the block designs, repeated rapid stimulus presentation and the co-incidence of scanner noise preclude definition of tonotopic organization revealed in event-related approaches. Single-subject fMRI mapping at 7 T of the representation of fingertips in S1: a comparison of event-related and phase-encoding designs.
A desirable goal of functional MRI (fMRI), both clinically and for basic research, is to produce detailed maps of cortical function in individual subjects. Single-subject mapping of the somatotopic hand representation in the human primary somatosensory cortex (S1) has been performed using both phase-encoding and block/event-related designs. Here, we review the theoretical strengths and limits o...
متن کاملMovement quantity and frequency coding in human motor areas.
Studies of movement coding have indicated a relationship between functional MRI signals and increasing frequency of movement in primary motor cortex and other motor-related structures. However, prior work has typically used block-designs and fixed-time intervals across the varying movements frequencies that may prevent ready distinction of brain mechanisms related to movement quantity and, espe...
متن کاملAcoustic noise and functional magnetic resonance imaging: current strategies and future prospects.
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has become the method of choice for studying the neural correlates of cognitive tasks. Nevertheless, the scanner produces acoustic noise during the image acquisition process, which is a problem in the study of auditory pathway and language generally. The scanner acoustic noise not only produces activation in brain regions involved in auditory process...
متن کاملSelectivity for animal vocalizations in the human auditory cortex.
We aimed at testing the cortical representation of complex natural sounds within auditory cortex using human functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). To this end, we employed 2 different paradigms in the same subjects: a block-design experiment was to provide a localization of areas involved in the processing of animal vocalizations, whereas an event-related fMRI adaptation experiment was ...
متن کاملSequential effects of propofol on functional brain activation induced by auditory language processing: an event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging study.
BACKGROUND We have investigated the effect of propofol on language processing using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS Twelve healthy male volunteers underwent MRI scanning at a magnetic field strength of 3 Tesla while performing an auditory language processing task. Functional images were acquired from the perisylvian cortical regions that are associated with ...
